Getting into and surviving college, language barrier, and being an engaging student.

Hi chattyPhD friends! Today I would like to emphasize the crucial role of being an engaging student  as well as adding a little more to my academic journey.   How do you act when confronted by a language you were not taught growing up? Maybe for you results in an awkward conversation that involves hand miming.   For me it involved a daily routine of watching Criminal Minds, reading school assignments, and speaking in front of a mirror.   Until this day the English language is an obstacle. For me it takes extra dedication and work when writing a sentence, or reading papers. However, there is always an upside.   Entering college requires students to pass several standardized exams. Back when I was in high school, the tests were the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT), SAT, ACT, among others.   After only one year in an American high school and attempting to continue my pursuit to be a scientists there were some major road blocks....

Viva Cuba! A story of how I came to America

Image
Hi chatty friends! Today I like to share how I came to America. I know what you are thinking. No I did not sailed across the Caribbean ocean or swum with the sharks (yiakes). I actually flew in a plane with my family at the age of 16 and yes my feet were dry. Knowing no English, Sí NADA! I started my last year of high school. My high school in Cuba was very different from the one here in America. My high school in Cuba lacked running water. So my friends and me walked miles out of the school every other day to resource some. We sang songs about love, the moon, the heartbreak and drank 'made up' rice-wine to celebrate our youth despite the adversities.  For the first few months in my American high school felt like a daze. High school augmented all my teenagers fears. I felt excluded, misunderstood, ignored, unimportant, and very very depressed. You know those friends from high school that stay forever. Yep those! I still have those from my high school in Cuba...

Introduction to a Chemistry nerd

Image
Hi there! How are things going? Hopefully not too bad. If you are at home cooped up because of the "the GreatCoV" (caugh caugh), you can spare a little time reading my story. You see this is my first blog. I wanted to do this for a while with the hope to inspire other students to follow a path of science and to advice young students to have the right mindset for college. This is me, If you are wondering 'Why she looks like such a nerd?' is because I aim to be one. Hopefully, when you leave here, you can learn a little about me and why I chose Chemistry as a career, and why you should consider doing a career in science.
